Sails and High Technology

Sails…A history
If the wind provides the energy necessary to propel sailboats forward, then the sails are the boat’s engine power. The materials used, how they are set, the size and their shape determine the boat’s power.

Computer software has replaced the drawing table for sail designers and offer the best compromise between the objectives to be attained and the restrictions which are imposed. Thus, depending on the type of boat to be equipped (cruiser-racer, ocean racing trimaran or round-the-world monohull) and, in accordance with the conditions which the boat is expected to encounter, the master sailmakers, with their computers will gradually design the boat’s wardrobe in the same way as a great couturier preparing his spring-summer or fall-winter collection.

The distribution of the cloth panels of the sails is fundamental in order to give the sails their desired shape so that they can best exploit the masses of air which are transformed into a driving force. Certain points of the sail can be put under enormous strain and so panel layout and stitching have to be sufficiently resistant, which usually means placing both in the same direction as the strongest effort.

Traditional cloths have disappeared from the landscape of modern sailing. Synthetic Fibres have now replaced cotton, linen or Jute in the threads of the sailcloth. Dacron or Tergal, polyester fibres, nylon, polyamide fibre are the most commonly used. Resistant, easy to handle, and capable of great results whatever the conditions, they comprise the large majority of sail wardrobes currently on the water and are available for a reasonable price.

Kevlar, aramid fibre, Spectra, polyethelene fibre, Vectran, carbon fibre are just some of the new materials. Increasingly light, varying in degrees of elasticity and resistance to ultraviolet, these materials equip top competition boats.

Whatever the material, the threads have to be woven first. Traditional weaving involves crossing the threads at right angles.The fill or weft is formed by running threads across the cloth, the warp being formed by running threads across it lengthwise. Cloth stretches mainly across the bias rather than along the yarn direction of the warps or the filling. Weave density is of the utmost importance. In order to improve its resistance still further, the cloth is treated, coated with a resin polymer which tempers the yarn, locking the weave.

We must not overlook the famous sandwiches which combine materials to obtain the advantages of both.

The Kevlar laminate fixes Kevlar threads between a polyester film and another film whose fill is made of polyester and whose warps are made of Kevlar. Likewise, films of Mylar, a very fine polyester, fix Kevlar threads whose density and angle of weave are able to withstand enormous loads.

The main thing is to give a nice round shape to the curve of the canvas and to give the right shape to the depth or camber which will be filled by the wind. Part of the boat’s performance will depend on it.

But before the sail can grace the boat with its presence, it has to pass through skilled hands of “couturiers” who must bring the panels together, punch the cringles into place in the three corners and reinforce parts which will be subjected to relentless impacts against the pars or the guardrails.

So, on all three of the edges, the luff, leech and foot, extra layers of cloth are added to protect the sail. Wavy straps called “bolt ropes” are also sewn along the foot and the luff (of mainsails) which they strengthen to enable the slides and other cables to fasten the sail onto the rig.

Next to follow are the batten pockets for sails which need them, reef points, pennants and eventually the ultraviolet tape of the roller/furler genoa.

The mainsails

Depending on their size, tonnage and sailing classification, sailboats require lightweight or heavyweight sails, some of which is just advisable, some compulsory.

It is not apparent from the mainsail’s same but it is not the biggest sail on board a sailboat. It is a triangular sail, hoisted along the mast and generally held horizontally by the boom. Surface area can be reduced if necessary. That’s where the clew outhaul, the cringle and the reef pendants come in useful. Battens are slipped into their pockets and serve to stiffen the sail providing better shape holding in the wind.

A second mainsail is to be found on boats which have a second mast, for example, ketches whose mizzen mast is set aft.

Genoas.

Genoas are the big foresails, banked onto the forestay (or jib-stay) and are set fore and aft overlapping the mainsail mast. Most of the genoas on pleasure cruisers are now set on roller-furlers and can be unfurled and furled again as needed. This avoids the delicate sail-changing manoeuver in heavy weather.

Jibs

jibs are the triangular sails which are hanked on to the forestay and which almost all dinghies, cruisers and pleasure sailboats have. An intermediate-sized sail, the staysail, can be set onto the inner forestay. The smallest jibs of all are the storm jibs.

Google Page Rank Falls Short For Forums

When it comes to online communities there are some disturbing trends taking place right now. Forum administrators are spending too much time working to improve their Google page rankings, and on search engine optimization in general.

The idea behind this trend is that better page rankings make a community easier to find. Although there is a truth to the idea that making your forum rank higher in searches will get you more sign-ups, there are some problems with this line of reasoning.

First of all Google PageRank isn’t really relevant for a forum. A high page rank may help somewhat with SEO, but it will never help to keep the community itself active. In other words, what good is a high search engine ranking and a flood of new visitors if there is no activity in the community to support your member base, and nothing to attract new signups?

In this article we will take a closer look at Google’s page ranking system, and at how it fails when it comes to forums.

A Look at Google Page Rank

Before we discuss page rankings for forums, let’s cover the PageRank system itself.

Google created page rankings as an easy way to represent the popularity of a website. The idea behind page rank is that the more links that a website has pointing to it, the more popular the site must be.

To gauge a site’s popularity Google will count the number of one-way links to that site, analyze the popularity of the site that provides a link, and also analyze the relevancy of each link. With this data, Google’s system calculates a page rank. In other words PageRank is a single number that represents the popularity of a web site.

Although this system works for a regular website (assuming people aren’t cheating the system by buying relevant links), it doesn’t work well for a forum.

Google Page Rank and Forums

For a bulletin board, the page rank numbers are somewhat irrelevant. They do count to a certain degree on the front page of the forum. But the threads themselves (the important content on the site) are rarely rated properly.

In fact, by the time a single page of a forum has a good page rank; it is usually considered an old post. The thread may have held the most useful information on the web, and it may get hundreds of replies; but, since no one is linking to it, the page rank is still quite low.

The same idea holds true for the forums in their entirety. An old forum, which no longer houses an active community, will often have a much higher page rank than the newer active community. The reason for this is quite simple. Many people have happened across old threads and linked to them to provide information to others. This hasn’t happened with the newer site yet.

Microsoft Dynamics GP Financial Reporting - FRx Overview For Consultant

Microsoft Dynamics GP ERP is very popular in USA, Canada, South and Central America, Caribbean among midsize businesses in Manufacturing, Services, Distribution, Pharmaceutical, Wholesale and Retail, Healthcare, Placement, Project Organization, Non-profit and other industries. It supports both ERP and MRP functionality, where its production modules suit fits to discrete manufacturing. Light manufacturing could be implemented directly in GP bill of materials module. There are several reporting tools, recommended for Great Plains: Report Writer, SQL Server Reporting Services, Crystal Reports, and of course, if you need powerful link to General Ledger, FRx reports is recommended. In this small publication we would like to give you FRx introduction:

1. Installing FRx. For Great Plains Dynamics GP version 10.0 you will need to install FRx 6.7 with Service Pack 9. Please download Service pack from your Dynamics GP Partner Source for your customers. Please, note - FRx installation media is separate CD and you can not find it on Great Plains CD #1 and 2. FRx requires its own registration keys: Serial Number, Authorization and Registration Number(s). Keys are your organization name and number of users dependent, so please change them according to your purchased license

2. Building the most popular first report. In our opinion, the first report you will be excited to design in Profit and Loss Statement for the current year with monthly summaries, probably compared to the budgets, if you are larger firm. In order to build such a report, please open FRx designer, and create new Row Format. Here click Edit, Add rows from chart of accounts and in the selection window change all your segments to All &&& and in the Account Range Start and Account Range End put your Revenue accounts ranges. This will make the first section - revenue. Repeat the same procedure for Cost of Goods Sold, Expenses, Other Income and Other Expenses. For each section you should also add section description, such as Revenues and summary (TOT), such as Revenues Total. Next step is Column Layout creation. Here you need to add DESC on the column A, then GL, Actual, YTD on the column be and reporting periods one through twelve to represent January through December. Please note that this first report doesn’t deploy companies consolidation, reporting tree (where you could of trace P&L by department, product or sales territory)

3. FRx troubleshooting. One of the most popular errors, you could encounter with is “Invalid path specified for work drive”. This is likely to happen when your install FRX as domain administrator and then you are trying to activate it for restricted security wise users. Please, open FRx, click Admin, processing options and change Optional Work Drive to the folder available to all your domain users. Other files and places to check. If you are moving SysData folder, where all FRx reports specs are located, please be sure to have it available for users to read and write, in some situations

4. FRx support on Customer Source. If you are current with Microsoft Dynamics GP annual maintenance program, then you should be able to open the case on your customer portal with MBS GP support team. If you are not current in annual enhancement program, then still you could appeal to Dynamics GP and FRx technical support, however your case cost charge will be higher
